History and heritage

The story starts here. Among the influences, mentors, and environments that shaped our way of seeing. Each project builds on this quiet archive of memory and craft, honoring the past as a guide for what comes next.

1971

Fifty years ago, Egyptian architect Yehia Ibrahim Assaf founded AEB with a profound belief: architecture must serve both people and place. The firm's first project in Oman, completed in 1971, marked the start of a lasting partnership with a nation on the brink of transformation. From the outset, AEB balanced heritage and progress cultivating trust, fostering collaboration, and embedding social purpose into every design.

1976

It began in 1976 in Muscat, Oman, at a time when architecture was driven by necessity rather than human experience. Our founder believed spaces should serve people as much as they serve a purpose balancing functionality, beauty, and the way people live and connect with their surroundings. From these principles, AEB has grown while staying true to its origins: crafting designs that honor human needs, respect the environment, and integrate creativity with purpose. Today, our legacy continues in every project delivering spaces that are innovative and deeply connected to the communities they serve.

1980 - 1990

As Oman's cities expanded through the 1980s and 1990s, so did AEB. The firm evolved from foundational infrastructure into complex public institutions, commercial developments, and large-scale master plans. Growth was anchored in reputation and consistency investing in technical expertise, nurturing young talent, and building a structured, multidisciplinary organization capable of shaping national-scale developments.

2003

Building upon the foundations established by his father, Arch. Mohammed Y. Assaf joined AEB not to inherit a name, but to expand its meaning. Trained under his father's mentorship, he brought the eye of an architect and the instinct of an artist. Through what he defines as "Modern Simplicity," he introduced clarity of line, restrained palettes, and refined detailing answering the demands of the 21st century while remaining rooted in cultural authenticity.

Current time

Today, AEB stands as a multidisciplinary firm of over 200 professionals drawn from eight regions, with more than 1,500 completed projects across Oman and the wider Middle East. The firm integrates architecture, engineering, and project management under one cohesive vision embracing advanced technologies like BIM and AI while remaining grounded in its founding principles of quality, accountability, and contextual design. What started as one architect's belief has grown into a legacy that continues to shape communities, infrastructure, and the Omani skyline.
